Laser Direct Molding

 

Laser direct forming (LDS) material is a kind of modified plastics containing organic metal complexes. The characteristics of organic metal complexes are: insulation, non-catalytic activator, visible light resistance, uniform dispersion in the plastic matrix, high temperature resistance, low toxicity, no spillover, no migration, chemical resistance, and electroless plating after laser-induced activation. NFD laser direct forming materials are mainly used in the fabrication of three-dimensional circuits. The three-dimensional circuits are the technology of depositing precise and precise metals on the surface of plastic parts. Electronic components can be directly welded to form three-dimensional circuits. Laser direct forming has endowed the plastic electrical interconnection function, saved the design space and increased the product design flexibility.

LDS technology is commonly used in wireless antenna and current-carrying circuit. It can integrate mobile phone antenna into a functional plastic component inside the mobile phone, realize component integration and product miniaturization, reduce costs, and is suitable for mass production. LDS technology allows dynamic changes in the prototype stage, provides multiple configurations of production components, and has little additional die cost, enabling rapid innovation. Compared with metal antennas or flexible circuit boards, LDS components have three-dimensional functions, and can easily realize three-dimensional layout, which is suitable for complex characteristics. It is suitable for different kinds of antennas without changing the mould.

There are four main steps in LDS process.

1. Injection Molding: The LDS material containing laser powder is melted through an injection moulding machine and then injected.

2. Laser spark: Laser powder is activated by laser beam to form rough surface of metal core, which is the anchoring point of next electroplating.

3. Electroplating: electroless plating on the rough surface of the metal core to form a 5-8 micron circuit and become a MID component with conductive lines.

4. Assembly: The product is installed on the product.
